The star touched down in the Eastern European country on the 4th of July in time for the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival opening ceremony. Mel, 58, was being presented with the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema.
The actor wore a blue and white baseball cap on top of his greying hair and a navy and white pin-striped sports shirt, jeans and dark trainers, while opaque shades concealed his eyes from view. One among his group showed some American spirit on the biggest summer holiday in the US by wearing an American flag backback.
Mel handled a small carrying bag and waved to bystanders before ducking into a waiting car.
The Patriot star cut a suave figure in black tuxedo, black bow tie and snowy white dress shirt later on Friday as he arrived at the film festival's opening ceremony in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Mel seemed genuinely touched as a mob of fans greeted him with cheers, and he took time out to sign autographs while his two bodyguards stood sentinel.
Mel sported what looked like a California tan as he was escorted inside.
At the ceremony, Mel introduced his 2006 film Apocalypto, an epic adventure that takes place in the last days of the Mayan empire.
