The Avengers star said that he believed Mel Gibson should be given the opportunity to make movies again, and was game to have Gibson helm the fourth installment of the superhero franchise.
How powerful is Iron Man?
The Golden Avenger might even be strong enough to save Mel Gibson’s career.
Robert Downey Jr. would return to the blockbuster franchise if his close friend Mel Gibson directed it, he told Deadline.
When asked if he thinks Gibson should be able to star and direct major Hollywood films again, Downey was supportive.
“He’s a fundamentally different guy,” he said. “I think it was just the very worst aspects of somebody’s psyche being treated as though they were the blanket statement about a person.
“But honestly, we are talking about a competitive business and it all comes down to this: because he is so gifted as a storyteller and a director, I don’t know that he requires some sort of mass forgiveness.
“He has changed, but at the same time he’s still Mel.”
Just last month, Downey said that there’s “no plan” for a fourth installment of the superhero franchise, but changed his tune when asked if he’d be on board with “Iron Man 4” if Gibson was tapped to direct.
“Correct,” he said. “Why not? That would be bananas.”
Downey might just be returning the favor to his longtime friend, since Gibson cast him in 2003’s “The Singing Detective,” a film that helped Downey relaunch his Hollywood career after it hit the skids due to several run-ins with the law.
