TROPFEST organisers have confirmed Mel Gibson as a member of their celebrity judging panel on Sunday.
The two-time Oscar winner will join The Mentalist’s Simon Baker, Rebecca Gibney, cinematographer Don McAlpine and director Jocelyn Moorhouse (The Dressmaker) in the VIP tent at Sydney’s Centennial Parklands to pick a winner from the 16 Tropfest finalists.
Gibson is in town filming his World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge, starring Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington.
“I know what it’s like to be starting out in this industry, in Australia, and what a big difference a break can make to a career,’’ said the actor/director who catapulted onto the global stage with the Mad Max trilogy.
“Tropfest has been doing an incredible job over the last 23 years as a platform for young filmmakers and I’m absolutely delighted to support the great work Tropfest is doing.”
Festival founder John Polson described Gibson’s presence as “an enormous honour.
