Gibson & Wallace asked to make a new Braveheart Movie

2012.03.01 - 15.45 pm

melnewsThe Foundation has named Merian C. Cooper, ‘The Greatest American Hero of the Twentieth Century’. Merian Cooper voluntarily and heroically risked his life to repay America’s debt to the two Polish officers, Tadeusz Kosciuszko and Kazimierz Pulaski , who voluntarily came to America’s aid in our War for Independence. Merian Cooper, in the 20th Century, voluntarily created and formed the Kosciuszko Squadron of American and Polish pilots who fought for Poland in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919-1921. Cooper and his fellow pilots risked their lives for freedom, just as Pulaski and Kosciuszko had done earlier. Three of the American fighter pilots gave their lives and Cooper’s plane was shot down and he spent months in a Soviet prisoner of war camp. The Americans helped the Poles smash the Bolsheviks at the gates of Warsaw in what is known as “The Miracle on the Vistula River”. Cooper and the other Americans received Poland’s highest military honor, the “Militari Virtuti”, which is equivalent to our American “Congressional Medal of Honor”. Twenty years later, during World War II, Cooper, than at the height of his great Hollywood career as a Producer, re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and became America’s oldest active duty fighter pilot, flying with the “Flying Tigers” in China, under the command of famed General Chennault.”

Jamison continued: “The Foundation is also asking Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace to become special members of the Foundation’s International Advisory Board to assist in illuminating the greatest stories of America’s great heroes in the days to come after the Merian C. Cooper/Kosciuszko Squadron Film Project .”

The Foundation has previously provided all information about the Merian C. Cooper Film Project, including the written film treatment and the video film treatment, for Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace and is asking representatives and agents of Mr. Gibson and Mr. Wallace to contact the Foundation as soon as possible.

Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace will be in charge of the production as they were in “Braveheart”, all roles in the production will be decided by them.

The Foundation has launched the first ever social media campaign to help finance a major motion picture via donations to a charitable foundation. Jamison said, “We are calling on all members of the motion picture industry and community as well as all patriotic Americans to contact the Foundation to Illuminate America’s Heroes as soon as possible to join this great cause to illuminate America’s greatest heroes.”

Mel Gibson tried to help Whitney Houston recover from drugs

2012.02.24 - 17.00 pm

Mel Gibson had reportedly tried to come to the rescue of Whitney Houston while she battled an addiction to cocaine, marijuana and other drugs in the early 2000s.

The Braveheart star had previously helped Britney Spears following her public meltdown in 2008 and offered up his estate in Costa Rica as a refuge for the pop star to recover from her struggles away from the spotlight.

According to TMZ, Gibson visited Houston when she was in the throws of her substance abuse problem and spent time with her to help beat her drug demons. Due to his efforts, he was even invited to the singer's private memorial service on Saturday, the Daily Express reported.

However, Gibson was not able to attend the funeral in Newark, New Jersey due to family plans.

Mel Gibson sits down for some Q&A

2012.02.13 - 16.30 pm

melnewsMel Gibson recently gave a Q&A session after a screening of George Miller's original Mad Max at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles. During the event, Gibson dropped some details on his upcoming projects, which include a Viking epic – now been titled Berserkerhis upcoming film about Judah Maccabee and George Miller's thoughts on the latest Mad Max film, Fury Road. Gibson's next film, Get The Gringo (formally titled How I Spent My Summer Vacation), is going straight to VOD but he appears to still be interested in big-budget filmmaking – much like his previous directorial efforts Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto. With regards to the Viking film Berserker, Gibson said:

“I just got a second draft of something I’m really excited about today. It’s actually a Viking thing. Vikings, as you know, are very unsympathetic characters and these guys will be bad. I sort of hooked up again with Randall Wallace, who did the script on Braveheart. Yeah, it’s pretty good. It’s called Berserker.”

He went on to say that the portrayal of Vikings in the film would be unlike anything that
we've seen from Hollywood before (presumably the Kirk Douglas starrer The Vikings):

“They did not have horns. No, I don’t think they had horns. They’re going to look real. I want to make something real and visceral.”

When asked if Leonardo DiCaprio and writer William Monahan were still involved in the film ,
the Lethal Weapon actor replied:

“Things begin and people wander off and do their thing and I do my thing. I just took my stuff and wrote it with Randall. Where it goes from here is anyone’s guess.”

In relation to his Maccabee movie, Gibson said:

“I’m working with Joe Eszterhas on that. That’s from the last two books of the Old Testament, which is like; just read it some time. Maccabee 1 and 2. Just read it, it’s like a Western. It’s an amazing story. It’s heroic beyond belief. The entire might of the Seleucid Empire, which was Persia, their whole objective at the time was to wipe Judea off the map and they almost did it except for this little hold out that miraculously grew and wanted it all back again.”

Gibson also spilled some of his thoughts on Mad Max: Fury Road, which has The Dark Knight
Rises star Tom Hardy taking over the titular role:

“I like that kid, Tom Hardy. He’s a very interesting actor. He reminds me of one my sons a bit but I had lunch with him, he’s a firecracker. It’ll be good. He was already cast, he just wanted to check in. I don’t know, maybe it was like ‘Is it okay?’ I was like ‘Sure, it’s fine. Have a ball, knock yourself out. I got better things to do."

The Viking Movie is still Alive

2012.02.07 - 22.00 pm

Deadline also had a little news about the long talked about Viking epic Gibson has been planning for years.  The good news is that the movie is still alive.

melnews[Gibson's] Icon label is developing an epic period Viking film that Gibson will direct, and which his Braveheart writer Randall Wallace has just turned in a second script draft. And Gibson and Joe Eszterhas are writing for Warner Bros an epic drama about Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee, who teamed with his father and four brothers to lead the Jewish revolt against the Greek-Syrian armies that had conquered Judea in the second century B.C. Gibson will likely direct that film as well, which is also being produced through Icon. [Deadline]

Leonardo DiCaprio was once attached to the Viking film, but who knows what's going on now with casting options.  Stay tuned.
